Slow the signs of aging, in and out of your medspa visits
Here is a little summertime guide to slowing the signs of aging. Some things can be implemented in and other things out, of your favorite medspa.
Things you can do at home to improve your skin and minimize factors that cause damage to your skin that cause signs of premature aging.
1: Sun. While vitamin D and sunlight is absolutely beneficial, patients often ask me if it is better to use a chemical or physical sunscreen while spending peak times or long hours in the sun. Physical sunscreen in short, is something that sits on the skin and reflects sun rays – such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. This is my preference and next time you see me, ask me which are my favorite products! By minimizing sun burns you can slow the aging of your skin with less wrinkles and sun spots!
2: Alcohol consumption. Alcohol causes dehydration not only in a generalized sense, but also to your skin. It can deprive the skin of vital nutrients and cause signs of premature aging.
3: Cigarette smoking/vaping. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and impairs blood flow to the skin- depriving it of nutrient rich blood, this can cause premature skin sagging and wrinkles as the toxins in tobacco products damage collagen and elastin, and not just on your face. Meanwhile, the physical act of smoking and repetitive pursing of the lips worsen vertical lip lines and the crow’s feet can also worsen from squinting to keep heat and smoke out of the eyes. And don’t forget you can ruin your nice smile with stained teeth and gum disease.
4: Diet. I do not mean you need to go on a diet. This just means being cognizant of what you habitually consume. Try implementing more organic fruits and veggies in your day. Fruits and vegetables have antioxidants, such as betacarotene and lutein, that aid in healthy skin development and tone and maintains a healthy glow for your skin and hair.
5: Sleep. A good sleep regimen is key. Poor sleep increases the stress hormone cortisol which can increase inflammation and stress (again not just secluded to your skin). Poor sleep can also cause dehydration and changes in pH. All of these factors negatively impact the glow of your skin.
6: Exercise. Exercising release endorphins that make you feel and good for most of us, when you feel good, you shine. Exercising regularly increases blood flow to the skin, bringing nutrient rich oxygen to replenish the skin. Sweating also helps open pores to expel trapped dirt and oil. But remember, don’t sit in the sweat after you workout, be sure to cleanse thoroughly to remove all the buildup. Also, exercising activates the lymphatic system by muscle contractions and can rid of metabolic waste, helping you look brighter while detoxifying. There are many more benefits that exercising provides throughout your body, not just to your complexion.
7: Hydrate. Dehydrated skin looks old. Our skin is our largest organ and should be well hydrated especially when being exposed to the sun, exercising or drinking alcohol- all damaging to the skin as mentioned above. Dehydrated skin can look dry and flakey and dry skin is more prone to wrinkling! Hydrating does not just mean from within, you must also use a good skin care products.
8: Medical grade skincare. Help maintain your results we achieve in office, by implementing a proper medical grade skincare routine. Ask me for assistance in choosing the products that are right for you.
Options for maintaining glowing, youthful skin and turning back hands of time at Sunkyssed Injector.
Sometimes we do everything right- and sometimes we don’t. But in either case, a quick stop at your favorite medspa can aid in your skin care and anti-aging goals.
1: Dysport®/tox. Helps minimize dynamic wrinkles of the face and over time improve some static lines. Dysport® is a great preventative treatment, by softening the contraction of facial and neck muscles over time, you get less lines “etched” in the skin therefore keeping the skin looking younger, longer. Dysport® can last up to 3 or 4 months. Check out my other blogs on Dysport® to discover areas of treatment and additional information.
2: Dermal fillers. Fillers are a great way to add back lost volume and contour the face with little side effects or downtime. We use products in the Restylane® family and Radiesse®. Selection of product is determined based on area of treatment selection and goals. Fillers can last from months to years. Check out my other blogs on fillers to learn more!
3: Microneedling. One of my favorite treatments, that gives a big result with little downtime! Microneedling perfectly complements your tox and filler treatments! Continue fine tuning and airbrushing your skin by stimulating collagen and elastin with microneedling treatments. I provide microneedling with the only FDA approved SkinPen®, which is great for acne scar reduction, improvement in fine lines, enlarged pores, pigmentation, texture, tone and crepey skin. Downtime is about 24 hours. A series of 3 treatments is recommended followed by a single treatment every 6-12months. My microneedling blog provides more details on the treatment.
4: Chemical peels (Vi Peel. ®) Chemical peels are used to remove sun damage and improve skin texture and tone. We offer a variety Vi Peels®, which are my favorite option for mid- depth peels. Peel selection and frequency are based on severity of the underlying damage and degree of desired correction. Downtime is one week, on average. Depending on correction desired, 1-3 peels spaced 30 days apart may be recommended, as well as 1 peel per year to follow, to maintain results.
5: Surgery. Sometimes surgery may be the best option for you. With my background in plastic surgery, I may recommend you see a surgeon for a consultation to go over additional procedures, if I feel my minimally invasive treatments won’t meet your goals. Common plastic surgery procedures I refer out for often include: Facelifts, blepharoplasties and brow lifts.
